The World May End Tomorrow, So Seize The Day And Play.

Since the dawn of time, man has studied the Eldritch Arts and harnessed the magical Æthers; powers that flow through Thresholds into this world from the beyond. To explore this phenomenon, the Arcanum was founded: four Leagues who each protect one of the four elemental Æthers. The dark and mysterious Shaitan, who are often accused of being too much akin to the very horrors they have sworn to defeat; the enigmatic and mystical Daevani, classical wizards and atavistic keepers of the ancients lores and old ways; the proud and heroic Tetragrammaton, defenders of the Silent and self-designated moral compass of the Arcanum; the hardy and ingenious Apothecarium, alchemists and explorers of the worlds beyond, willing to push the limits of invention and discovery at all costs. They all entered into a covenant called the Sub Rosa: Four Oaths they all pledged to safeguard the Silent, the Eldritch, and the worlds beyond from whence the Æthers came.

However, around one hundred years ago, the light of magic sputtered and died. The noble forces of the Arcanum were beset on all sides by the renegade forces of the Oathbreakers, an unholy alliance of monsters, Liches, and mystical supremacists. Unable to reconcile the horror of a future in which the Oathbreakers controlled the forces of reality, the Arcanum forced a magical paroxysm unlike any the world had ever seen before. The Tunguska Blast forced closed the gateways to The Outer Spheres and stopped the flow of magical Æther into our world for last one hundred years. At that time, ten thousand of the Arcanum’s most respected Magisters stepped into the SoulVault, vowing to return and bring the light of Eldritch magic back to the Earth when the threat was abated.

That was 1908.

But Now The Century of Silence Is Over!

Now the Thresholds are re-opening, spilling magic, monsters, and mayhem back into a world full of young, brash Guttersnipes with no understanding of how to wield the mystical forces from beyond. The Century of Silence has passed, and magic is slowly filtering back through the Thresholds. Now, as the Æther floods back into our realm, the Magisters awaken and return, in search of new students to train in the dangerous crafts of Magic and Metascience to protect our world from those that may threaten us from beyond.

These are the new soldiers in the final battle against any Oathbreakers that may have survived the Century of Silence and the ancient threats from the Outer Spheres. As a stalwart member of the Arcanum, you have a duty to uphold the four Oaths, and to defend the Silent Masses from all of the threats both within and without!
